Employed to maintain public safety or national security by averting further criminal acts, preventive detention entails the incarceration of individuals prior to a trial or conviction from a court of law. While some argue its necessity in circumventing future threats, critics condemn its application by citing violations of human rights – including those of liberty and fair trial. Delegates of the UNHRC will dissect the intricate connections between preventive detention and human rights, exploring avenues for reform and accountability.
Kshitij is a first year BA. LLB student from Pune, he is also a Model UN enthusiast and loves indulging in interesting debate topics and committees.
